Embeds
Embeds
Every embed on this template is a facade: our own poster, our own caption, our own button. The third-party iframe is created when you press the button, and never before.
How it works
0 Requests before you press a button
- On load the page requests nothing from any other origin — open the network panel and check.
- Pressing the button swaps the poster for a real iframe and remembers your choice for that provider on this device.
- A facade with no permission granted keeps its note visible; withdraw permission and the note comes back.
Nothing on this page reaches YouTube, Vimeo, Dailymotion, SoundCloud, X or the map provider until you ask it to.
Inside the newsroom: how a front page is made
YouTube
A hosted video. The poster is your own image at your own sizes, so it never shifts the layout while it loads.

The season the small theatre sold out
Vimeo
The same facade with a different provider. Only the data-embed value changes.

The bus route that vanished twice
Dailymotion
Useful where a broadcaster publishes to Dailymotion rather than YouTube.

Demo podcast: nine days of diesel
SoundCloud
Audio works the same way — handy for a podcast episode at the foot of a story.

Where the convoy crossed
Map
A map is the heaviest embed on most news pages and the one readers least often open. It belongs behind a button.

Newsletter
A newsletter sign-up in an iframe. This one points at a page in the template, so it costs nothing at all — swap the src for your provider’s form and it becomes a click-to-load embed like the rest.

A post from X
X
The card below is our markup, not theirs: it costs no request, it still reads correctly when the platform changes its rules, and it degrades to a quote with a link.

Eleventh draft of the fuel annex just landed. Same nine days of diesel, three new signatures, one paragraph moved. Thread on what changed.

Withdraw your permissions
Granted permissions are remembered on this device. Clear one provider at a time and the notes come back.
For buyers
Every facade on this page is the same partial with a different provider and poster. Adding a provider is one line in embed.js — the markup does not change.
